why do cars cost so much?

tomcat45 asked:

I am not starving, but I can't afford a car, neither can any of my parents. it's so wierd. it seems like 6000 can't get you a good running car that wont cost you an extra 1000 the next month. everyone who list their cars seem to want to sell you their problems be it a wrecked car, a bad transmission or one with way too many miles, so many that you wont have any left for yourself.
wow you guys really lifted my mood. I just had trouble in my area because all the cars are marked up, I live in a hip city so, everything just costs more. I guess I just need to be patient. I am just want something that drives straight (literally!) :)
If I could give all of you top answer I would!
thanks

1000 dollars can get you a good running car if you know where to look and what to look out for.

3000 dollars can get you a good running car that doesn't need anything any time soon.

Above 5000 dollars and it becomes TRIVIAL to find a good used car.

Maybe the used car market in your area just *****? (If you don't live in a rural area, I assure you it does not.)

I'd like to know how you're going about looking for used cars if you can't find a good one for 6 grand.

To find a good car at any cost takes knowing what you are buying.

Have a competent mechanic look at any vehicle you are thinking of buying. They can tell you what would need to be fixed. If he/she says the car is in good condition for year and price, buy it. Then you won't have to spend the extra $1,000.00 the next month.

If the mechanic won't okay it…RUN as fast as you can in the other direction.

Look on-line, in the paper, at local auto lots any of these could have a GOOD $6,000.00 car.

It may be a trade in at a local new car lot that they want to get rid of quickly.

Ask around and ask around again and be patient until you find it.

The more people you ask in you area, the more likely you are to find it.

It takes a lot of time and energy to properly engineer a car. A lot of people have to design it, then machinery needs to be designed, assembly lines adjusted, etc. On top of that is raw materials, labor and other continuous costs.

You can get a good car for 6 grand by the way, you just have to know what you're looking for. Don't expect to find a new Beemer for $6k, but if you look than you can certainly find something.

Ian F is exactly right.
On December 1st 2007 I purchased a nice running car for $100 (yes, $100). It has only a few problems and they have no effect on driving (headliner, AC, etc.), I am spending about $300 to get the car into overall perfect condition (of course, I do all the work myself). Drivetrain is in perfect condition as is the interior cloth and exterior paint, and just about everything else. It drives nicely and is dependable. Never been in a wreck. I bought it from a very honest guy. The trick: you have to know where to look. NOT the dealerships! Craigslist is awesome if it's big in your area.
BTW high miles don't matter as long as the car has been properly maintained.
Good luck…
