My parents disagree! To buy or not to buy a new car?
Ok, so I'm a senior in high school and will probably be going away far enough from home next year to college that I wont need a car.
However, I'm currently carless because i wrecked the old one, but my parents want to get me one as an early graduation gift. I need it to get to and from school now.
My mom wants to buy me a newer car around $10 – $14 K because she says it would be better in the long run and I can use it to graduate school.
But my dad found this Honda Accord 2001 from my uncle who's selling it for $5800 with about 97k on it. My dad said it's a good car for right now cause i just need it for high school and i wont use it in college, except during summer.
My mom said the honda will stop working once it hits 100k, so might as well get a good car i can use for a long time.
I'm honestly don't know who to agree with. I like the honda too. I want to know how much longer it would last me?
but also, we have to pay for college.
Any opinons? Please.
Also the honda has a little dent on the side and a few scratches, but no big deal. haha, and stop hatin on my mom, she's just looking out for my saftely.

only 100k on a honda? Is she serious? If you take care of Hondas, you can drive 300k easy! And an 01' honda should still be in good shape. I'd take it

While it depends on the prior owners style of use and maintenance, Hondas are one of the most reliable cars and 100k is nothing to a well maintained accord.
Not to mention, the cars popularity means cheaper replacement costs with more aftermarket and used replacement parts.
Common problems to look at as soon as you buy it is the EGR valve, easily replaced and costs less than $75.00

Honda's will run practically forever if you take care of them. Since you wrecked one car, it would be smarter of your parents to get the less expensive (tho very reliable) car. I would take a Honda with 100K over a new American car.

Dad is right. You don't need a new car yet and the car will last way past 100k miles.

Hondas are very good cars. Any car you buy could have proplems, when they are used. I would go for the honda right now. That car will probably last you till you are done with college.

Even though I am a mother, I think your father is right. (Although women are more often right than men)lol
I talked to several used car dealers and did the research and every mechanic you talk to will tell you that if you're buying a used car, make sure its a toyota or honda. High miles mean almost nothing when dealing with these cars. They're like timex watches, they take a lickin' but they keep on tickin'

Get the Honda. 97k is ok for a Honda as long as your uncle took care of it. If you go to a dealership, you won't get a good car for $10k. I sell cars for a living so I do know what I'm talking about.

Id personally get the Honda..your mom (no pun) doesnt know what shes talking about. Hondas ARE one of the most reliables cars on the road. You have to think of long term. Even if its not a car you like..get your schooling done, get a career then buy your toys. Trust me, that car will last 300,000 and then some, make sure you keep up on maintenance and change the oil!!
I woudlnt doubt youll have that car when your out of college. Just take care of it and itll take care of you. And this is all comming form freaking domestic lover. Good luck!

Honestly your mom has NO idea whats shes taking about. Hondas made in Japan will go 300k but if it was made in america then I wouldn't expect as much. I would say you should by a new suzuki or hyundai sedan. There Cheap, Will last you ten years, and have good gas mileage.

Why buy a new car and let it set? That does not make any sense does it! The Honda will run way past 100K as long as it has been taken care of. I would say have your Dad take it to a mechanic and have it looked at and if all is ok then go with the Honda. Why spend $10K-$14 K for a car that will set except in the summer for a while? Get the cheaper one that will last a bit and enjoy!

The Honda is a reliable vehicle, and will usually give you 200k-300k miles without major issues!
At 100,000 miles a the Accord is just getting broken in. I would say the Honda is a good choice!

get the honda. they're practically bullet proof. Like some of the others have mentioned, if it was even marginally maintained it will run for another 150,000 miles, easy.
sounds like your mom wants you to buy a nice new car for HER to drive while you're away at school!!

What was your mom's idea for a 10-14 k newer car? compared to a 7 year old Accord? ..an 07 taurus? Honest you'd only need a car for one year? then i'd go for the $5800 accord b/c it will be easy to sell in a few years or less.
And you'll have more $$ left for college…….and breathe
