Can you be sued? Sure, anyone can be sued for anything these days. However the chances of any judge holding you liable for the accident is going to be pretty small. The vehicle passed through three sets of hands (four if you count the impound lot) before it was involved in the accident. If you have a bill of sale or the registration signed off to show it was sold then you were no longer the owner as of that date. It's not your responsibility to ensure the other person registers the vehicle in their name. Unfortunately you will still have to hire a lawyer to defend you or risk having default judgment made against you if you don't show up to defend yourself.

i **** to be the bearer of bad news but yes you are going to be held liable for the car there has been no transfer of ownership therefore you are considered to be the owner. hard lesson to learn i know i've been through it. also yes they can and probably will suspend your license.

Yes it can. You are still the legal owner of the car on the records of the Texas DPS. You should have immediately filed a Release of Liability form with the Texas DPS when you sold the car to avoid just this kind of problem.
