Buying a Corvette?
ihop asked:
I am planning to buy a corvette (of the used variety) next spring (2008). To all you gear heads and corvette owners, what should I specifically look for in these cars? Don't get me wrong, this is absolutely not the first time I've ever purchased a car. But it is the first time I've looked at 'vettes. So aside from the standard inquries (actual mileage, # of owners, reason selling, wrecks, etc) what should I be noticing or asking about these cars so that I can make a sound purchase?

when buying a corvette you should be pleased with the cars body shape the colour and the noise it makes because you wouldnt want to buy a corvette and not be happy with its looks and sounds.

For starters I would recommend checking all the fluids, condition of the paint, electrical components, and accident history. If you are going to shell out money for a corvette take it to a reputable mechanic prior to purchase to have it thoroughly inspected. I would suggest a mechanic that is actually familiar with corvettes not someone who only sees one a year or less. Trust me you don't want get into a vette that needs several things replaced. Depending on what year you are looking at repairs could get expensive very quickly.
As a corvette owner, I prefer vettes that have under 50K on the odometer. Not saying you can't get a good car with mileage over that, but I definitely wouldn't touch anything with over 100k on it unless it's a classic. A good corvette will come with lots of documentation in terms of what has been done to the car maintenance wise and any modifications. Stay away from any vette that has zero documentation.

I bought a 1994 Vette in 2000 and it's still perfect today. Obviously drive it and see if there any clear cut noises or performance issues. Drive it on the highway as well and try to get to 75 mph if you can. Drive it with the windows up for a while and with them down to hear any interior or exterior rattles. It depends what year you are looking for, but I would look at the cleanliness of the vehicle including the engine department. Inspect wheels, tires and shocks (easy to open the hood and look down at the front ones). Also, look under the car to see if it has bottomed out by somebody driving it too fast over a bump or dip. Other than that go for low miles and if the current owner has service records get those too and you should be good. Chevy makes those Vettes solid so unless a previous owner neglected or abused it you should get over 100K on it. Have Fun.

What price range are you talking about? Low miles is the key. One that is mostly original. You don't want one that some backyard mechanic gripped it open. Check for Body cracks, leaks, color, paint condition. Smooth trany. strong running.
I've got an 84 red / tan leather vette.Glass top .With only 22700 original miles. It's a beauty. And it's for sale!! $15000. Email me for
